How to delete a Snapchat account
Snapchat developers were recently accused of invasion of privacy after violations of the privacy of some employees were revealed. Basically, they were spying on users. Not a pleasant discovery, is it? It might even make you think about leaving the social network.
Whatever sparks the idea, it could be excessive attention from strangers, a commitment to overcoming internet addiction, or your 25th birthday. We'll just tell you how.
Snapchat Data Logging
Before deleting your Snapchat account, you'll probably want to save the photos and videos you've had so much fun sharing — and maybe some other info related to your activities on the social network, too. Unfortunately, Snapchat doesn't offer a way to download everything at once. Here, instead, we check out the options it offers.
1. Backup Snapshots and Stories Setup
By default, Snapchat does not save your photos and videos. A snap you send to your friend will disappear as soon as your friend sees it. If you post a story, it will be deleted in 24 hours. There is no way to restore them later.
If you're toying with the idea of leaving the social network, you might want copies of your posts available. To do this, install souvenirs — a function allowing you to save snaps on your device (Camera Roll) or cloud (Memories):
- Open your profile and tap the gear icon in the top right corner of the screen.
- Go to Features (Android) or Account and select souvenirs.
- Locate Save destinations.
- For the Save button option, set the location of your saved snapshots. To keep copies of your videos and photos on your device, select Memories and Filmor opt forFilm only if you don't want your data saved in the cloud.
- For My story posts option, select souvenirs. This setting will prevent you from having to save each post manually.
As for your personal chats, you will have to press Save every time you send a snap that you want to keep.
2. Download photos and videos from Memories
If you want to quit Snapchat right away, but so far you've only saved snaps to Memories, download your favorite photos to your device. The iOS app does it all at once.
- Enter souvenirs.
- Tap a check mark in the upper right corner.
- Highlight the snapshots you want to download.
- Tap the arrow icon at the bottom of the screen.
- Select Save.
Android users need to download snaps one by one.
- Enter souvenirs.
- Tap the photo to download.
- Select Export snapshot.
- press Film.
3. Contact support
Interested in more than photos? You can contact Snapchat support and request all the data they have: history of tracks detected with Shazam, Bitmoji avatars, photos and videos you have saved in Memories (if any), etc. Support staff can respond to your request and send you anything you request.
4. Obtain an archive with the data collected by the social network
If you want to view the history of your actions in Snapchat, a list of your chats, connections, etc., you can request this information from the social network.
This is what you will get:
- History of your authorizations, purchases, geolocations, searches, and much more,
- An archive of your chats,
- Your profile data, your friends and your subscription information,
- Your Bitmoji avatars.
All of this will come in a ZIP file, which you can keep as a keepsake. But first you need to have an email address associated with your account. If you haven't done so yet:
- press your avatar icon in the top left corner of the app.
- Open Settings by tapping the gear icon in the upper right corner.
- Select E-mail.
- Enter your email and press Save.
- Open your email client, find the Snapchat letter and click Confirm your email.
Do you have an email associated with your account? You can request the archive without delay. If you prefer to do it via the app:
- Open your profile and tap the gear icon in the top right corner of the screen.
- Scroll to Privacy (Android) or Account actions (iOS) and select My data.
- Enter your username and password.
- Read the list of data to be sent to you in the archive file and press Send request.
If you request the archive via the browser interface:
- Open https://accounts.snapchat.com and obtain authorization on the website.
- Click on My data.
- Read the list of data to be sent to you in the archive and press Send request.
Either way, after a while you will find a ZIP file with your data in your confirmed email inbox.
Delete a Snapchat account
Once the backups have been sorted, you can now proceed to delete your account. Like most other social networks, Snapchat suggests that you simply deactivate your profile first, so you have time to change your mind.
FYI: You cannot delete your Snapchat account through the app; you have to do it via the website:
- In your browser, open https://accounts.snapchat.com and enter login (pseudonym) and password.
- Click on Supprimer mon compte.
- Enter your username and password again.
- Click on go on.
That's it - now just delete the app from your mobile devices.
Restore a Snapchat account
You can recover your account within 30 days from the deactivation date. To do this, enter the system through the application using your nickname to log in. The program will ask you to wait a few seconds, then enter again – and you're there! Your account is active again. All your data, including your profile, will be restored. It will be as if you never left.
While your account is deactivated, your Snapchat friends won't see you in the app and won't be able to message you. After 30 days, your profile will be deleted for good – after that, neither you nor Snapchat employees will be able to recover it.
